Every generation has different morals and ethics regarding individual character, but sports still commands an Old School mentality. Conrad is about to rise or fall in the face of these boyhood challenges.

Rudo seems to miss the point of Conrad’s rhetorical phrase. On the football field Rudo is years ahead of his age, but everywhere else he’s usually a bit behind. School to him seems to be more struggle than success.

Even thought she’s the smartest girl at Treewiddle Elementary, Lizzy only works for the school newspaper The Treewiddle Tribune to improve her resume. She also lacks journalistic decorum whenever she encounters immature boys, much to Conrad’s dismay.
