Rudo seems to miss the point of Conrad’s rhetorical phrase. On the football field Rudo is years ahead of his age, but everywhere else he’s usually a bit behind.
School to him seems to be more struggle than success.

Winslow is reluctant to bow to any authority other than himself, much less a grade school science teacher. But fortunately he was temporarily humbled enough to warn Conrad of the danger of not listening to the teacher’s instructions.
Conrad seems to be lacking the genetics for big arms, but also the will to overcome. Puberty sometimes arrives too early, sometimes too late, and other times not a all.
Rudo seems to be arriving at a very important self-awareness moment in his life — but unless his upcoming test is in spiritual metaphysics he better start focusing on his studies!!!
In life, the crucial moments that test us will often reveal our core personality traits. These moments are DEFINITELY not for Conrad. Poor lil’ guy.
Sometimes it’s best to make your point WAY beyond normal behavior so there isn’t any doubt what you are trying to say. ;-P
