Character sketch (pre-digital painting)
This is a sketch for a digital painting I’m going to try. Tablets are a good tool but unless you can define some style all your own, as naturally occurs when artists work directly with natural materials (paper, canvas, board, brushes, pencils, etc), then the artist risks being elbowed out in favor of the tablet’s default expressions.
Creating your own style isn’t always easy, (which is why we have plagiarism and remakes of older successful times) so an artist must push themselves, push the materials, the expression, and risk failure to seek success. These words are pretty grandiose for a simple sketch but I am always reminded of Paul Gaugin’s words, “Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes.” …. Keep creating to achieve your best artwork!
Nice work Doug. Love all the shading that gives it a real sense of depth.
Thanks, Tony! … I’m thinking of putting together some videos to teach people how to do it on their own. Got to learn the tech part of it though. Ugh!
That looks great. It reminds me a lot of some of Breathed’s old work.
Looks like he’s all grown up!

Dear Doug
Your “Kidz” are adorable. You are a gifted artist/illustrator and you are truly missed in my kitchen.
